Simple Tips to Prevent Lung Cancer
Experts have identified several causes of lung cancer. Wanna know what's the Most lung cancers are caused by the use of tobacco. Changing your lifestyle can, over time, gradually reduce some of your risk for lung cancer.

Tobacco
Tobacco use is the leading cause of lung cancer. More than 85% of lung cancers are caused by smoking. Smoking is a bad habit that will lead to death. According to a survey, Worldwide, about 1.35 billion people smoke. The world population statistics in 2009 stood at 6.8 billion meaning almost 20% of the world’s population smokes. Cigarette contains nicotine and tobacco that will harm the alveoli in our lungs.

2010 Smoking Statistics in the United States of America and Worldwide
  • Caucasians – 21.4% of all Caucasian adults smoke – compared to a few years ago when 26% of Caucasian men and 22% of women smoked
  • Black or African Americans – 19.8% of all Black or African Americans smoke – compared to a few years ago when 29% of African American men and 21% of women smoked
  • Hispanics – 13.3% of all Hispanics smoke – compared to a few years ago when 24% of all Hispanic men and 12% of women smoked
  • Asian and Pacific Islanders – 9.6% of all Asians smoke – compared to a few years ago when 24% of all Asian men smoked and 7% of women smoked
  • American Indians and Alaska Natives – 36.4% of American Indians and Alaska natives smoke – compared to a few years ago when 41% of all American Indians/Alaska native men and 41% of women smoked
To prevent lung and other cancers, do not use tobacco. If you keep yourself away from tobacco, you can reduce your risk of getting lung cancer. Your risk will gradually decrease with time as your lungs recover. Quitting smoking reduces your risk for cancer, and your risk continues to decrease as long as you do not smoke. The benefit of quitting smoking is greater the younger you quit. Even cutting down how much you smoke may reduce your risk, it is better to quit completely. In one study, cutting in half the number of cigarettes smoked each day significantly reduced the risk of getting lung cancer during a 5- to 10-year period.

Tips in helping to quit smoking: Nicotine gum, medicated nicotine inhalers, nicotine patches, and oral medicines such as varenicline (Chantix) or bupropion are available to help you to quit smoking.

Other exposure risk factors
Other things that increase your risk of lung cancer include asbestos, secondhand smoke, and radon exposure. Certain occupations, such as mining and farming, people who are involved in those filed are expose to fumes, radioactive dust, or other chemicals that may be harmful. Taking precautions to reduce your exposure to harmful substances in your environment can reduce your risk of developing lung cancer.

Radiation therapy to the chest area can increase your risk of getting lung cancer too. Radiation therapy (in American English), radiation oncology, or radiotherapy (in the UK, Canada and Australia), sometimes abbreviated to XRT or DXT, is the medical use of ionizing radiation, generally as part of cancer treatment to control or kill malignant cells. Radiation therapy may be curative in a number of types of cancer if they are localized to one area of the body. It may also be used as part of curative therapy, to prevent tumor recurrence after surgery to remove a primary malignant tumor (for example, early stages of breast cancer). Radiation therapy is synergistic with chemotheraphy, and has been used before, during, and after chemotherapy in susceptible cancers.

Diet

Recent studies on the connection between diet and lung cancer have shown mixed results. Antioxidants, phytoestrogens (found in whole grains, legumes, and soy products), and cruciferous vegetables (like broccoli) may reduce the risk of lung cancer. But there is no clear evidence that these foods help protect or cure high risk people. Other research shows that taking supplements of beta-carotene, vitamin E, and retinoids may actually be harmful and increase the risk of lung cancer in people who continue to smoke, smokers are advised to stop their bad habit.

By the way, having a balanced diet could help in maintaining our body health and get rid of disease.A balanced diet consist of seven classes of food such as carbohydrates, proteins, fats, vitamins, minerals, fiber or roughage, and water. These seven classes of food are very essential for our body. Food is needed to repair and replace body tissues, build healthy body, supply energy for body, maintain body temperature and build new cells.  Plant foods provide an abundance of antioxidants and fiber, both of which are known to reduce the risk of developing several different types of cancer.

Vegetables and fruits reduce the risk of developing cancers of the lung, stomach, esophagus, and larynx, while legumes and grains may help to reduce the risk of developing cancers of the stomach and pancreas. Isothiocyanates, Indols, Cumines, Phenols, and Flavones are cancer fighting compound which can be found in vegetables and fruits. As a result, consuming a number of vegetables and fruits could reduce the chance of getting lung cancer which may lead to death.

Healthy Life Style

Sufficient Sleep

A healthy living style could hinder lung cancer. One should get sufficient rest in order to maintain a healthy life style. Sleep is essential for a person’s health and well-being, according to the National Sleep Foundation (NSF). Yet millions of people do not get sufficent sleep. For example, surveys conducted by the NSF (1999-2004) reveal that at least 40 million Americans suffer from over 70 different sleep disorders and 60 percent of adults report having sleep problems a few nights a week or more. Most of those with these problems go undiagnosed and untreated.

Moreover, more than 40 percent of adults experience daytime sleepiness severe enough to interfere with their daily activities at least a few days each month - with 20 percent reporting problem sleepiness a few days a week or more. Furthermore, 69 percent of children experience one or more sleep problems a few nights or more during a week. Moreover, teenagers nowadays choose to stay awake during late night just to enjoy their night life.

Everyone’s individual sleep needs vary. In general, most healthy adults are built for 16 hours of wakefulness and require an average of eight hours of sleep a night. Individual with sufficient sleep can make sure their body parts work in a good condition and stay away from lung cancer.

According to the American Cancer Society, research has shown that people are fit through exercise has a reduced risk of develop lung cancer. The advice is to exercise at least 30 minutes at a moderate rate of minimum of 5 days per week.  By doing that, he or she may vastly preferable to suffering through treatment for avoidable conditions.

A retired oncologist and founder of the non-profit Cancer Foundation for Life, Gary Kimmel, MD, provides " FitSTEPS for LIfe" programme which includes aerobic exercises, muscle strengthening and stretching techniques. He suggests these types of traning as they can improve the body's oxygen-carrying capacity and make the heart and lungs work. He also stated that if people start to exercise early, they will show a magnificent results in the future. However, excessive exercise is prohibited and should be avoided!

  5. Does smoking shisha causes lung cancer as well?

    1. Yes, the risk isn't much lower as most people say. Most people believe that water used in the shisha makes the tobacco less toxic, but that isn't true. The toxic particles ARE still there. In fact, hookah smokers may actually inhale more tobacco smoke than cigarette smokers, because of the large volume of smoke inhaled in one smoking session, which can last as long as 60 minutes.

Worse, the pipes (shisha) may not have been cleaned properly, increasing the risk of contracting infectious diseases.

      Hope this was helpful.
